These days, though both are NATO members, Greece and Turkey have been on the brink of war, most recently earlier this year over a small, rocky island. The animosity is rooted in centuries past, to the days of the Ottoman Empire, when both the Serbs and the GreeksĬhafed under rule from Istanbul, which Lykourezos calls Constantinople, the Greek name for the city. It stems from Greece's hostile relationship with Turkey, which is also often hard for outsiders to fathom, Lykourezos added. "It is difficult for anybody outside Greece to understand rationally," Lykourezos said about Greece's relationship with Serbia.
